I often meet with a new prospect whose first question is, “What all can you do for me?” These entrepreneurs are busy, over-worked, and overwhelmed with all they have to do. They know the way they’re operating isn’t sustainable, let alone scalable. They are doing too much already, yet they know that to grow their business, they must figure out a way to get even more done. They need help, but they are so used to doing everything themselves that they have a hard time identifying what they can turn over to a VA or other outsourcing professional.
Does this sound like you?
When I’m meeting with a prospective client in this predicament, I have a handy exercise I walk them through. I share a tool called Delegate & Elevate™ (available at no cost in the EOS® Toolbox). It’s designed to help you identify what you can eliminate, automate, or turn over to someone else so you have more time to do the things you do best.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1. Make a comprehensive list of everything you spend time doing.
Include everything you do, not just the things you want to delegate. The goal is to get a complete picture of your workload. When you have a finished list, move on to step 2.
Step 2. Put every item on your list into one of the four sections of the Delegate & Elevate™ tool:
- Love/Great is where you place things you love to do and are great at doing.
- Like/Good is for things you like to do and are good at.
- Don’t Like/Good is for tasks you dislike and don’t do well.
- Don’t Like/Not Good is for work you dislike and aren’t good at.
Step 3. Delegate everything on the bottom half of the sheet to someone else.
Anything you don’t like and aren’t good at is something you shouldn’t be doing. If you have difficulty seeing how anyone else could handle the things to be delegated, look for a VA who can tell you how. Now you will be free to focus on doing only the things you enjoy and do well.
If you really want to free yourself up, you can do what I do: look at the top half of the sheet and delegate anything that someone else can do just as well or better. This allows you to operate from your genius zone all the time and devote all your energy to doing the thing you went into business to do in the first place.
If you’ve been putting off hiring someone to outsource to because you don’t know where to start, begin with this tool. Then use IVAA’s RFP system to search for a virtual assistant or freelancer who can help you delegate and elevate yourself to your unique abilities.
