How to Set Effective Goals in Your Virtual Assistant Business

Do you set goals for your Virtual Assistant business? It’s not a silly question – most of the time, the response given by VAs is actually no!

As support professionals, we weren’t necessarily taught business skills like goal setting.

But it’s very important to your success, to set goals for yourself so that your business can grow and flourish.

Or maybe you ‘think’ you set goals, but you aren’t doing it right.

Let’s talk about how to effectively set goals for your business. Goals that you will achieve.

The first place to start is simply asking yourself one question.

What do you want?

Start there, and then get more specific.

Do you want more clients? How many do you need or want? When do you need to get them? What do you want to do for those clients? How much will you charge them? Where can you find them?

By getting really specific about what you want, you can set goals that you can actually achieve.

If you want 3 clients by the end of next month, then you must specify that.

I will get 3 new clients by July 30th.

That’s a great start, but you can’t quit there.

And then get really clear on who they are, where they are, and what you can do for them.

I will get 3 new social media clients from LinkedIn by July 30th.

Now you know where you are going to look for them (LinkedIn), and what service you are going to provide (social media). But you still can’t quit there!

Next is action step time.

Stating your goal is great.

Now write it down. Seeing your goal written down helps it become more real. Telling someone else about it is even better.

If you don’t have a business accountability partner, you should consider getting one.

Did you know that 92% of people who set goals alone do not reach them?

You increase your chances of attaining your goals to 65% if you tell your goal to someone else. That increases to 95% if you have an accountability partner. Really! There’s some motivation right there!

Then plan your action steps.

Action Steps

  1. Reach out to 2 people daily on LinkedIn. These connections could be direct or groups.
  2. Post one piece of content daily to your LinkedIn profile that shows your expertise in social media. This is crucial. If you are using a social media platform to market a service, make sure people can see that clearly on your profile.
  3. Track your connections on a simple spreadsheet (they add up quickly). In one month you will make 40 to 60 connections (depending on whether you take the weekends off or not). This way you can see what is working and what is not, and you can adjust your strategy as you go.
  4. Invite 5 people per week to have a sales conversation with you. This will put regular people into your conversation pipeline and will help you to finesse your sales conversation, so you can convert connections into clients.

Track your sales conversation numbers too. If you are not converting at least 5/10 prospects, get some help with your technique.

You will see that when you put this process in place, it works. Getting 2 clients by the end of next month is not hard when you have clear action steps in place to get you there.

That’s the way all goal setting works.
