Being a VA is one thing – acting like a business owner is quite another.
Some Virtual Assistants do not realize they must do both at the same time in order to be successful.
Having a success mindset is a big part of acting like a business owner. You must visualize yourself being successful in order to achieve it.
Sometimes that means that you have to create a different kind of mindset than you are used to. It’s not hard to do, but it might take some effort if you are usually less self-reliant.
Asking others for their opinions has a place in your business, but not around mindset. You have to do that part yourself. No one else can tell you how to think – about yourself, your skills or abilities, and your value.
Here are a few tips to help you achieve that success mindset:
Positive thoughts – Keep an eye on what you are telling yourself every day. If you are struggling in your business, it’s easy to think negatively – that you are not good enough, or that your clients are crappy, or that you can’t get clients to pay you what you are worth. But what you focus on, grows, and so if you are constantly in a negative frame of mind you will stay there. You have to work every day at finding things to push yourself out of that mindset. Tip: Keep a success journal – write down 3 things every day that you did well, that you are proud of, or how you helped someone. When you need a boost, look at your success journal and think positive thoughts. You can do it!
Proactive Attitude – Being proactive is something that really good VAs do. Thinking ahead to what your clients need is a great way to keep the work fresh and showcase your expertise. If you are constantly waiting for clients to contact you to send you work then you are not being the supportive professional that they need. Be proactive. Schedule regular production calls with them to talk about what they are doing in their business. Offer ways that you can help. Stay ahead of the trends happening in their industry and let them know how you can help them implement the things they need to grow their business. Your business will grow, too!
Procrastination – Motivating yourself to work can be difficult some days – particularly when you aren’t too busy when it’s easy to let things slide to do later. But beating procrastination is a really important part of your mindset. If there are tasks that you do not like doing, that you are doing for clients, that can beat up your mind pretty easily. It doesn’t make it fun to get up and work every day. Managing your procrastination can be done by developing good daily routines and work habits. If there are things you don’t particularly like doing, consider doing those in the morning to get them done. Things that require more concentration or focus should be done at your most productive time of the day.
Knowing your value – A big part of mindset as a business owner is knowing the value that you bring to your customers. Often we set a rate and we talk to people about what they need, and the value part gets left out. We talk about their expectations versus what that will cost them – and sometimes they balk at the price. Or sometimes they have different expectations. When you are clear on your value and how that can help your clients that will come out in every business conversation you have. Your clients will recognize you as the professional that you are, and the money part often becomes a secondary concern. Really, it does! The key is to convey to the client how you will help them fix the problem they are having. So figure out what that is, and you will know your value.
Acting like a business owner is easy when you realize that you are not just a support person in someone else’s business – you are their equal. Try some of these tips yourself and you will see the difference it can make in your own mindset.
When you cultivate a successful mindset, that comes through in everything you do – your marketing, your conversations, and your work!
